He's probably spying on you all the time and he makes you return home to report on your activities very regularly, plus surprise trips, but will expect you to achieve the same results as if you didn't take out the time to do it [20:28] And will punish you harsher for failure [20:28] And the Liege, Artifact, and Necromancy backgrounds are a way of reflecting the fact that the Abyssals have mentors that know the same charms you want to learn.
